Coaching is a process that aims to improve performance and focuses on the ‘here and now’ rather on the distant past.   It is designed to raise awareness of different perspectives and ways of doing things, and to enhance the individual’s ability to take responsibility for their own performance and development.

So why should you introduce coaching in your workplace?

  1. Specific support:  Where an individual has been away from the workplace for an extended period of time, coaching can help make the transition back to the workplace much easier.  The move back to the workplace post Covid is a great example of where coaching can support employees on their return to the office.  It can also be used to help employees who have changed roles, or where an organisational restructure has been implemented.
  2. Effective learning and development: Coaching supports individuals to develop through reflection and experience.  It is an effective way of learning many of the skills needed in the workplace, particularly behavioural and interpersonal skills.
  3. Better return on investment: Often there is little return on training as the skills and knowledge are not  quickly and easily transferred back into the workplace.  Coaching can either replace ineffective training, or support the transfer of skills from the training session into daily life.
  4. Personalised development: Coaching is much more personalised and targeted than most other training activities.  Coaching focuses on an individual’s needs and development areas, rather than trying to meet the needs of a full training room of people.  Its targeted nature means that it can be used for those working at all levels as well as high and poor performers.
  5. Career management: Coaching can help nurture and develop high-potential employees, plus support those moving into different roles
  6. Confidentiality: Those being coached may feel more inclined to discuss their fears, anxieties and development needs on a one to one basis rather than in a group setting.
